2004
saw elaine k release her second album, as is
at the beginning of the year in the U.S. to major
critical applause and also to a very favorable Irish
response. Shows across the U.S. followed with highlights
in NYC, Nashville, North Carolina, L.A.and Atlanta.
When trying to let others know who elaine sounds similar
to in style, fans and press have used some of the
following names; Ani DiFranco, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl
Crow, Shelby Lynne, Sade, Sinead O'Connor, Janis Joplin
and even Pink Floyd. Some have even suggested that
there is no comparison available. However, no-one
has disagreed about the talent, the voice of the entertainer.
elaine's hard work is beginning to pay off, she recently reached
a deal with MTV to licence the entire 'as is' album
for use in one of their most popular day time shows.
Around the same time elaine was also approached by
an independent U.S. label to submit a Joe Jackson
cover for their upcoming all female tribute album.
Although
usually one to stay well away from covers, elaine
explained it just felt right at the time. "Literally
about three days before I got the call, we had been
messing around in rehearsals and somehow we broke
into 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?'.
It's such a fantastic track and my rather pathetic
attempts at a Joe Jackson vocal gave the guys such
a kick that I simply couldn't ignore the request.
Then when we decided to actually do it we were faced
with the impossible task of recreating something that
was already brilliant. We had to make it our own -
you can't better the original version, so you may
as well try a different one."
While back in Ireland, elaine k and co. decided to
treat Irish radio to a double A side single release
of 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?' and 'Not About You'. 'Not About You'
is the opening track from the second album, as is
and regularly takes the house down during elaine k's
incendiary performances. She describes it as her response
to the people in her own life always thinking that
her songs are about them. It seems this hasn't swayed
anyone though, apparently this one more than ever
is now claimed by several individuals. How could you
blame them? - How better to seal your life's worth
than to become part of the elaine k catalog!
